What Do BBL, Moxi, and Halo Lasers Do?
I recently started my first laser treatment of the year at Levy Dermatology this month, and I’m so excited to finally share my results with you! I had my first BBL laser in January 2025. Then in February I did a BBL/Moxi laser combo. I did the same in October, and then I had a halo laser in December. The end of March 2026 I had another BBL/Moxi laser combo. I usually try to do 3 or 4 a year, but I try to schedule them around summer so that I am not out in the sum as much while healing.
BBL (BroadBand Light) is designed to reduce redness, broken capillaries, age spots, and overall pigmentation. It’s especially effective for targeting vascular redness and evening out skin tone.
Moxi laser focuses more on fine lines, texture, and sun damage. It helps smooth the skin and improve overall tone while also targeting brown spots and pigmentation.
Halo laser is a hybrid fractional laser that works on both the surface of the skin and deeper layers. It targets fine lines, deeper wrinkles, sun damage, and overall skin renewal. Halo is typically a more intensive treatment compared to BBL and Moxi, but it can deliver more dramatic results in fewer sessions.
Together, these treatments can be used separately or strategically combined depending on your skin goals, but all three are designed to improve tone, texture, and overall skin clarity.
What Can You Expect During and After BBL, Moxi and Halo?
BBL is always done first when combined with Moxi, and it’s very quick. It feels like light, quick rubber band snaps on the skin—definitely tolerable and over fast. Before Moxi, they apply a numbing cream for about 10 minutes. During treatment, it feels like a light prickling sensation with a quick zapping noise (which honestly startled me more than anything). Thanks to the numbing, it wasn’t painful—just warm afterward, like a mild sunburn.
For my second, third and forth BBL + Moxi treatments, I did experience swelling—especially around my eyes, cheeks, and nose. I needed a couple of days at home, but antihistamines like Benadryl and Zyrtec helped, and the swelling went down within a few days. The reason I didn’t experience it with my first is my nurse practitioner was probably going lighter on the settings on the lasers since it was my first time. It’s best to see how you respond first before going much heavier on your settings.
Halo is a bit different. It’s a more intense treatment, and you can expect more downtime. Your skin will feel hot immediately after (more than BBL or Moxi), and over the next few days, you’ll notice a rough, sandpaper-like texture as your skin starts to renew itself. This is completely normal and part of the process. While Halo does come with more downtime, it’s also known for delivering more dramatic, longer-lasting results in just one treatment compared to multiple sessions of lighter lasers. As always, everyone’s experience can vary, but overall I found all three treatments very tolerable with manageable downtime depending on the intensity. After halo, my face was very swollen for abut 7 days. I still did my daily work, errands, school pick up etc, but I didn’t really go out in public too much. No dining, dates, etc.
My Results: BBL, Moxi, and Halo
I started seeing noticeable results about 2-3 weeks after my BBL and Moxi treatments. I noticed the biggest changes after my second session. The longer the downtime, the better the results. The biggest difference for me was a reduction in vascular redness—especially on my cheeks and nose. I also saw a big improvement in brown spots. Some spots I had for years (that I thought were just freckles) have visibly lightened.Overall, my skin tone looks more even, brighter, and smoother. My complexion feels clearer, likely from reducing both the red and brown tones in my skin.
After adding Halo into my skincare journey, I noticed even more improvement in overall texture and smoothness. My skin looked more refreshed and refined, and it really helped take my results to the next level. I feel like I noticeably have less fine lines than I had before on my cheeks and below my eyes.
Which Laser Is Right for You?
- BBL: Best for redness, broken capillaries, and pigmentation
- Moxi: Best for early signs of aging, texture, and sun damage
- Halo: Best for deeper skin concerns, texture, fine lines, and more dramatic results
If you’re looking for gradual improvement with minimal downtime, BBL and Moxi are a great combination. If you want more noticeable results with fewer treatments and don’t mind a little more downtime, Halo is a great option, especially if you are more concerned with fine lines and wrinkles.
What I’m Doing Next
I have my second BBL/Moxi lasers scheduled for May this year, and I plan to have her up the settings even more. This will help me to maintain my results and see even more of a difference. It will be a great time to do it before summer gets here too.
Have you tried BBL, Moxi, or Halo? Or are you thinking about starting laser treatments? I would love to hear in the comments below!
