I’m a millenial, and I clearly love my skinny jeans. = ). But I decided to finally branch out and grab some different styles of jeans, including some straight leg jeans. The hard part for me is the length (I am so short, so skinny jeans are great because they are never too long.) and the proportions (I am petite, so skinny jeans don’t overwhelm my frame.) Straight leg jeans are such a classic though! I decided on this great pair, and oh my gosh they are so so comfy. Don’t get me wrong, they are taking a while to adjust to, but it’s nice to have a more casual pair of jeans that are a little different than everything in my closet. = )
.) First of all, I recommend going in store to one of your favorite places for denim, and trying on several different straight leg styles in person.
.) Baby steps. If you’re not ready to take a giant leap, then don’t. Find a pair that your’e comfortable with that doesn’t venture too far in style from your favorite tried and true jeans right now.
.) Think of what you will plan to wear them with. This will help you in deciding what kind to get.
.) When selecting a pair, you will want them to hit near your ankle, the smallest part of your leg. I prefer to pair them with heels or boots, but they look great with flats and sneakers too. Wear or take the shoes with you that you plan to pair them with so you can try them on together in the fitting room. Check the inseams on the jeans and the lengths.
.) I prefer a pair that has a nice fit through the waist, hips and bottom. If you want a looser, baggier pair, then go for that though, but I love to show off some shape since I’m so short and petite so the jeans don’t visually swallow me up.
.) I prefer a pair that has just a little stretch, but don’t get a pair with too much stretch or they will stretch and bag out and not look as flattering.
.) Proportions matter! Pair your jeans with a fitted top, cropped top or one that you can tuck in. I personally don’t like a sloppy, baggy top and pair of jeans together. If I’m going for straighter, looser jeans, I am going to pair them with a more fitted proportion up top and then add a pair of heels to create a long, straight line.
.) Give them some time. It might take a while to come around to these jeans and have them feel more “you.” Don’t worry, it takes time. They are looser, they might fit longer, they may not be as stretchy. They are definitely different, but they can be so comfy and flattering too.
