Looking for new Christmas traditions to do with your kids, especially ones that are Christ-centered? Keep reading for my top 10 this year!
This is Leighton and Grayson’s last week of school this year, and Amelia is out this entire week! It’s the holiday season, and that means it’s time to start celebrating with the kids! And this is the perfect week to make sure I am adding in all the fun Christmas traditions. = ) As a kid, do you remember how magical this time of year was?! Well, I want to make my children feel that way too. And honestly, we are never too old to have a fun, magical Christmas season while also remembering the true meaning of Christmas! I’m sharing my 10 favorite Christmas traditions to do with your kids this year, and many of them are Christ centered too.
10 Christmas Traditions to Do With Your Kids
1.) Decorate a Christmas tree while listening to Christmas music together. Then drive around and look at the Christmas lights around town! We have been listing to some of my favorite classic Christmas songs on Apple Music in the vehicle. And while at home, Alexa has been helping to get us in the Christmas spirit with all the holiday music we could ever want! The kids have been loving it so much! Leighton helped me with the Christmas tree decorating this year along with my mom. It was a fun night!
2.) Set up a nativity scene at your house. Whether you make a small one on the mantle or table or put a large one up in the front yard, I always loved seeing nativity scenes as a child!
3.) Write and mail letters to Santa. Most towns have a special mailbox to mail letters to Santa, and ours does too. It’s so fun for them to write them and then get to drop them off in the mail slot. It makes it so special!
4.) Enjoy seeing where Elf on the Shelf has showed up at your house each morning. This is a favorite of our kids! Grayson even has a little elf plushee too, and he loves snuggling with it each night. The kids love the magic of the elves and seeing what all they do each day after coming back from the North Pole. = )
5.) Bake cookies together and enjoy them while reading the Christmas story from the Bible. What kids don’t like baking cookies?! And while reading the Christmas story, does it get any more magical than that?! Let the kids join in on the fun by helping to make their favorite cookies with you.
6.) Decorate a gingerbread house together. Last year I took the girls to Gaylord Opryland, and we had so much fun decorating a gingerbread house. The girls loved it, and then they finished eating it! Lol. It was so much fun that I bought another one and let the girls and Grayson decorate another one together! You can get as creative and involved as you want by making one homemade or by buying a kit for the kids to decorate.
7.) Watch Christmas movies together while enjoying hot chocolate. We have watched Home Alone, Christmas with the Kranks and the Grinch several times already. The kids have been loving it! And I’m taking them to see Rudolph at the Orpheum soon and cannot wait! And hot chocolate is always a favorite, especially for Leighton and Grayson.
8.) Put on Christmas pajamas and open a Christmas book gift on Christmas Eve. There is never any shortage on gifts and toys for the kids! But books are different and still so special. It’s a great way to even gift a bible or a Christian book. And it’s a great way to teach the kids that Christmas isn’t about big gifts. A book makes a very special gift.
9.) Bake a birthday cake for Jesus and sing happy birthday. This was a favorite of mine as a kid! We might possibly buy one this year (gluten free), but we are definitely doing a birthday cake again and singing this year. The kids love it too, and I don’t blame them!
10.) Plan a Christmas morning scavenger hunt for the kids. It doesn’t have to be all about gifts under the tree Christmas morning. The hunt could be for Christmas presents or even for Christmas treats like candy canes and cookies. Get creative! The girls absolutely love scavenger hunts! We did one recently at the Enchanted Forest for elves, and they had so much fun!
