Thatch Caye Resort in Belize

Matt, myself, my sister and her husband all went to Thatch Caye in Belize last month, and it was such an amazing time. This was our first trip to Belize, and we loved how unique it was from our other travel experiences. We flew into Belize City and then took a commuter flight via Maya Island Air to Dangriga. It was a short 30 minute flight from Belize City to Dangriga. On the way back, I actually got to sit up front with the pilot. The plane only holds 13 people, and it was such a cool experience! Then we took a 30 minute boat ride from Dangriga to Thatch Caye.

From the moment we docked, it was so remote and so peaceful there. The island was tiny, but it was full of peace, beauty and character. All of the staff were so friendly and accommodating. And even though the island was small, there was SO much to do there. After checking in, we were escorted to our room. There are several different kinds of accommodations, but we stayed in a premier oceanfront cabana and really loved it! It was spacious both inside and out. There was a king sized bed, a gorgeous stone tiled bathroom, a window seat for lounging and watching the sunrise and even a little private roof patio with lounge chairs and a hammock. This was the perfect spot for me to enjoy my coffee and workout each morning.

I never left the island for the entire 5 days, and I honestly didn’t even need to. There was a nice beach with chairs, several bars, kayaks, paddle boards, snorkel and scuba gear and several other excursions that you could sign up for while here. Matt and Paul went fishing one day and caught 26 fish, and Carrie and I got massages. They also had bikes you could use, and we rode them together most every night. The entire island gathered for breakfast at 7, lunch at noon and dinner at 7. I’ve never been to a resort that really valued community so much, and it was really nice getting to know everyone on the island.

They also had a dock with a trampoline, water hammocks and several more chairs for lounging and relaxing. We loved spending our afternoons here, our mornings on the beach and then congregating with other guests for dinner. I went stand up paddle boarding one day, and all four of us went kayaking around the island. It was super windy and was quite the workout! Being at Thatch Caye is such a unique experience. It really gave me time to relax, reflect and recharge. Staying at Thatch Caye really is like staying with your big extended family. By the end of the week, we definitely did feel like family. It was a trip we will never forget, and we definitely plan to make it back one day with the kids. Have you ever been to Belize? What has been your bucket trip so far?
