Reading Nook

One of our favorite things about our new house is the fact that we have 4 bedrooms.  That leaves Leighton with a bedroom and a playroom, and we still get our guest bedroom/office.  Even when I first got pregnant, I always knew I wanted a reading nook or window seat for Leighton.  She only has 2 small windows in her nursery, but with the 2 big windows in her playroom, I knew it was the perfect spot.  I have been searching for over a year for the perfect way to create her own little window seat, but I wanted it to be something that wasn’t permanent that we could easily move around too.  I found these white bookshelf benches  at buybuy BABY, and they are exactly what I’ve been looking for.

These benches are only 12.6 inches tall, so I don’t have to worry about her climbing up a tall bookshelf tower and falling down or it falling on her.  They are super lightweight but still very sturdy.  I have stood on them quite a few times (even while trying to get these pictures) = ) and they easily hold all my postpartum weight.  = )  I love that they sit right on the ground so she can easily get to any book she wants herself.  They were really easy to put together too.  It took less than 5 minutes to put together each bench, and the hardest problem I had was that Leighton wanted to go sit on each bench before I had it put together.  She can easily climb up on top of them by herself since they’re not very tall, and she does.  She pulls out her books, puts them on the bench along with her sippy cup, and then climbs up to sit down and “read” her book.  It is the cutest thing.  We have a few hundred books so I was really worried they wouldn’t hold them all, but we had just enough room for them, and we even had some left over space to hold a couple canvas bins I already had.  My next project is to get some custom cushions made for each bench and eventually add a couple pillows too.  Now I just need to decide what color and pattern I want the cushions to be.  buybuy BABY literally has ALL things baby.  They’re not just your go to store for baby gear, they also have the best selection of baby furniture like these benches that double as book storage.  Do you have a reading nook for your child?  What is your favorite way to store and display books for your child?

  1. I love it! Great idea. I think a bright print with the yellow, coral, and turquoise in it would tie it all together and look lovely. White sheer or semi sheer curtains to keep it light and since you have blinds and don't need them for privacy. Maybe some coloful tiebacks in one of the colors. You could even get away with no curtauns with the blinds.
