No sleep. A lot of taxi or Uber rides. A lot of walking (in heels some of those times!) Very little food. And despite all the craziness and business, I would do it again in a heartbeat. = ) When people have asked me what New York Fashion Week was like, I tell them it was so busy, so tiring and so worth it. And that’s the truth. Whether you’ve been to New York Fashion Week 10 times or you’ve never been before, I think it is such a good experience to go (and come on it’s NY, of course it’s fun too!) = ) My mom, Leighton and I went together. We didn’t have much time since I had a lot of work meetings and couldn’t take off so we flew in Thursday at 6:00am and flew back Sunday at 8:00pm. It was a short few days, but I think we did a pretty good job squeezing it all in!
My mom watched Leighton while I attended showroom visits, brand meetings and shows and presentations. The best thing was that she was there so I didn’t have to worry, stress or have that unavoidable mom guilt. When I would get up in the mornings, I would see her. My mom would bring her to photoshoots, and I usually saw her back at the hotel for lunch and before bed too most nights. We even attended a fun little kids event and went to Central Park together (you can read more about that soon when I share my kid friendly NY travel guide.) = ) I think Leighton might have loved this New York Fashion Week trip just as much as I did. She is such a girly girl and loved all the dressing up, the jewelry…and the makeup. We can’t forget the makeup. She ended up with her own lipgloss tube before the trip was over. = )
Day 1 of New York Fashion Week
This is what I wore on day 1. We ended up landing about 9:00am in NY, but our hotel rooms weren’t ready for a bit so we just relaxed. Once we got into our room,
Glamsquad came by to do my and my mom’s makeup and hair. This is the 3rd time I’ve used them, and trust me, it is SO worth it! You don’t even have to get out into traffic; they come to you!
We didn’t attend any shows that day, so we all decided to be pretty casual. This romper was the perfect piece for that in between weather when it’s cool for summer but not quite fall yet. My roomies,
Jennifer,
Ashlee,
Liz and I went to the
Standard High Line. This place was so cool! It overlooks the city and has the prettiest view of the skyline. We had drinks on the rooftop and then went downstairs for dinner at the
Standard Plaza. The food was amazing and we loved the atmosphere and the view.
Day 2 of New York Fashion Week
I wore this pretty romper dress on day 2. If you need a pretty piece to dress up in but stand out, this is your outfit right here. It was a statement piece for sure, but it was still so comfortable since it was a romper in disguise! This was my busiest day by far. We had the Kate Spade presentation, 3 showroom visits (and a ton of shows like Nicole Miller that I ended up skipping because there just weren’t enough hours in the day!) We were constantly riding in taxis and running from one end of NY to the other, but it was so much fun. We got to meet up with
Megan and
Collins (Memphis girls!) that afternoon for a quick little shoot on the rooftop too. That night
Jennifer,
Liz,
Sandy,
Ashlee and I had the WWD x Samsung and
Michael Todd party. They were pretty cool, and then we went to dinner at
Bagatelle. This was such a great restaurant. The food was amazing, and as it got later they cranked the music up and really started to party. It was such a fun night!
Day 3 of New York Fashion Week
This is what I wore for most of day 3. I had the backstage presentation at
Banana Republic with
Stila Cosmetics in the afternoon and then the presentation. This was by far my favorite presentation of the week. We were one of the very first people to get in so we got to stand right up front to see everything including the models, Oliva Palermo and then shop the collection.
This pretty pink coat even came home with me. It is stunning in person! The collection was amazing, and the vibe was just so fun at this presentation.
This pretty cape dress is by Adrianna Papell, and is so pretty on! This was the perfect New York Fashion Week event to finally wear it to. I took it to my tailor and had them take up the length of the dress just a bit (I’m only 5’2!) so there would be more of a contrast between the length of the cape and the dress itself. I belted it and paired it with my favorite black suede heels.
I picked up this pretty fit and flare sweater dress at
Eliza J while in NY. Their fit and flare styles are always my favorite. They always fit me so well, and this one didn’t disappoint either. I met up with my friends Megan, Heather, Sandy, Collins and Ashley at Central Park to get some pictures of my outfit. We had such a fun time there. I’m not sure which was more eventful, the bike ride through Central Park or us changing clothing in the middle of the park. = )
This is another pretty Eliza J dress I picked up before my trip to wear while in NY. My favorite thing about this dress is the gorgeous statement bell sleeves…and how versatile it is! It is perfect for everything from date night to events even to weddings. And it will carry me all the way into spring too just depending on which shoes you pair it with.
This super comfy romper is another casual piece that I packed to wear during New York Fashion Week. It was perfect for those days when we didn’t have a bunch of shows to go to. I wore it some the first day (I know, I have a thing for rompers!) I love the fun tiered sleeves and the pretty floral pattern. I think it was perfect for the temperature too.
In between all the running around,
Sandy and I did manage to have brunch together on Friday and Saturday at Hotel Hayden. Their restaurant Mykonos Blue had the best grilled calamari I’ve ever had. I am already craving it and wishing I could find it here in Memphis. We felt like we were going 90 to nothing most of the weekend, but it was nice to slow down and take a few breaks here and there to catch up. We also may have stayed up every morning until at least 2:00am just talking and having girl time. = )
Day 4 of New York Fashion Week
This pretty look is what I wore for day 4 of fashion week. It was our last day and we had to fly back home that night so we tried to make the most of the morning. We got up early to pack, get ready and take pictures, and then
Ashlee and I hosted a fun little blogger brunch at Broken Coconut. This restaurant was amazing. Not only was it so cute with its little swing and “Eat Pretty” sign, the food was amazing. Everything there was healthy, but it didn’t skimp on flavor. We had oatmeal with blueberries, eggs, avocado and chocolate. We sampled some of their favorite new dishes, and I’m already dreaming of eating there when I’m in NY in a couple months again. The restaurant will be officially opening to the public within 2 weeks, so check it out if you’re in the area.
Airport Style at New York Fashion Week
This comfy look is what I wore home from fashion week. I wore
my comfiest jeans to travel in. The pretty little embroidered top was lightweight and perfect for those planes where the AC feels like it’s not even working. I also carrying a cardi to throw on in case it was one of those where you freeze to death on the plane! I packed my favorite new pair of mules in red suede. I have them in 3 colors and am obsessed. You will definitely be seeing mules a lot this fall and winter, so I would stock up on these that are less than $70. Check out the blog next Tuesday for my Trend Spin Linkup to see what I wore on the way to NY. It was super comfy and perfect for fall!
How to Prepare & Stay Organized for New York Fashion Week
Before you leave for NYFW, definitely make sure you pick out exactly what you are going to wear each day. I would recommend taking at least 2 dressy outfits per day, 2 semi-dressy (like my rompers and heels) and 3-4 casual street style looks (also great for traveling to and from the airport in.) You will definitely want to make sure that all your looks are fall inspired. Even if it’s too warm to dress in layers for fall, at least find fall colored clothing, patterns or textures like deep reds, blue and mustard. Think jewel tones too. They were so popular this year at fashion week. Suede, velvet and embroidery were really big too. I left just itching to order all things fall for this year!
When you’re packing for New York Fashion Week, I would also recommend bringing at least 2-3 pairs of neutral colored heels that will match most any outfit. I brought these suede heels and these nude tassel heels. They went with most every dress I brought. I also packed sneakers,
mules, some statement heels and a few pairs of fun booties. (Make sure you throw those sneakers or mules in your bag everywhere you go!) Pack shoes where you will get the most bang for your buck. If not, you might be carrying 2 bags that are only filled with shoes, and nobody wants to lug that through the airport. Borrow clothing and shoes from friends. It will be nice to wear something that is different than your normal style, it saves money, and it cuts down on packing so much in your suitcase.
I had a couple backstage shows with Maybelline, but I decided to skip them to hang out with Leighton, my mom and friends at Central Park in the afternoon. I was a little bummed to skip so many New York Fashion Week shows and presentations, but when they are 30 minutes apart and overlap, it just isn’t feasible. We all had a workbook with spreadsheets of our NYFW schedule in them. Know which ones you’re okay with skipping and which events you absolutely want to make so when it comes time you can decide quickly. It was so handy and convenient so we could see where we all were going next to see who we could ride with to the next event. I also recommend going ahead and entering in all the addresses to the events on that spreadsheet. It will take some time, but you will be SO glad you did it when you’re running behind!
