10 Spring and Summer Tablescape Ideas for Hosting, Holidays, and Everyday Entertaining

Setting a pretty table is always in style, but there’s just something about spring and summer that makes me want to set the prettiest table for everything — holidays, birthdays, brunch with friends, or even just a normal weeknight dinner outside on the patio. Tablescaping doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive to feel special. You don’t even have to have all new dinnerware or flatware. A few simple layers, fresh flowers and some thoughtful details can completely transform a table and make any gathering feel more intentional. You would be surprised how even a little mixing and matching can make a table look completely new.

Over the years, I’ve styled tables for holidays, celebrations, and everyday hosting, and one thing I always come back to is this: you don’t need a special occasion to set a beautiful table. My love for tablescaping first came at Christmas several years ago. From there it turned into every holiday. And now? I love setting a pretty table even for just an ordinary Monday night. Like all things in life, you don’t have to always save the “the fancy things” for a special day. Any day can be the special occasion. I am all about romanticizing life and enjoying the small moments each and every day. Here are some of my favorite spring and summer tablescape ideas and tips for creating a table that feels welcoming, seasonal, and beautiful.

Start with a Neutral Base

I almost always start with a neutral base so I can reuse pieces for different tablescapes. This base could be:

  • White plates
  • Neutral placemats
  • White table or tablecloth
  • Woven chargers
  • Linen napkins
  • Simple glassware

Using neutral basics makes it easy to swap out colors and decorations for different holidays or seasons without buying all new tableware. I almost always use the same hyacinth chargers, white dinner plates, white napkins, white tablecloth and clear glasses. From there I will add in pops of colors with accent plates, floral arrangements, ribbons, other centerpieces or decor, or a different tablecloth or fun napkin detail. And sometimes I will swap in some of my more colorful dinner plates or glassware, but more often than not, I keep it neutral and then just build upon it.

Add Seasonal Color

Spring and summer tables are the perfect time to bring in color. Some of my favorite color combinations for this time of year are:

  • Blue and white
  • Green and white
  • Soft pink and other pastels
  • Bright colors for a statement
  • Red, white, and blue for summer holidays
  • All white with greenery
  • Floral patterns for garden party tables

Even just colored napkins or a patterned table runner can completely change the look of your table. And if you want to keep all your items neutral, then just add some great floral arrangements. You can even add pops of color with food like I have done before with oranges, grapefruit, lemons and limes. They look great, and they are also super practical and will be used.

Use Flowers or Greenery

Nothing makes a table feel more finished than flowers. They don’t have to be fancy — grocery store flowers, clippings from your yard, or simple greenery stems work beautifully. My go to is definitely hydrangeas when they are blooming. Some easy centerpiece ideas are:

  • Small vases down the center of the table
  • A pitcher with flowers
  • Potted plants
  • Herbs like rosemary or basil
  • Hydrangeas
  • Tulips
  • Peonies
  • Roses
  • Lemon stems or fruit bowls for summer

Layer Your Table

The easiest way to make a table look styled is layering:

  • Tablecloth or runner
  • Placemats
  • Chargers
  • Plates
  • Napkins
  • Napkin rings
  • Place cards
  • Centerpieces
  • Candles

You don’t have to use all of these every time, but layering is what makes a table look full and styled instead of flat. Start with a tablecloth, add a table runner too, then florals and place settings and then even a little party favor. It adds so much visual interest to the table, and usually it doesn’t even take much work. It’s just like styling an outfit. The layers pull it all together.

Hosting Tip

One of the best things I’ve learned about hosting is that people don’t remember if everything was perfect — they remember how they felt at your table. A pretty table, good food, slow conversations, and time together are what make people want to come back again and again. You don’t need a holiday or special event to set the table — sometimes the best tables are just for a normal night at home with the people you love. Take your time, savor the food, enjoy the conversation, and cherish the people you share a table with. So…which table will you be recreating first?
