Packing for a trip as a mom is a whole different level. Everyone else just hops in the vehicle and goes, but not you! You plan for months or years, pack for everyone in the house, and then you leave while still planning out everything along the way. That’s where these packing hacks for traveling with kids can truly help make your trip so much smoother!
Between outfits, shoes, snacks, and all the “just in case” items, it can feel pretty overwhelming packing for 4 people. Over the years, I’ve found a few simple packing strategies that make traveling so much easier and a lot less stressful so you can get on with enjoying your vacation! These are the exact packing hacks I use every time we travel as a family, and they make a huge difference.
1. Choose Wrinkle-Free Fabrics When You Can
One of the easiest ways to simplify packing is to start with the right clothing.
I always look for wrinkle-free fabrics that can go straight from the suitcase to wearing without needing to be steamed or ironed.
Think:
- Knit dresses
- Stretchy sets
- Flowy pieces that don’t crease easily
This not only saves space, but it also saves time once you arrive, especially when you’re trying to get everyone ready quickly. I also pack a steamer just in case.
2. Pack Outfits Together
This is one of my biggest time-saving hacks.
Instead of packing random tops and bottoms, I pack full outfits together for each day. That means:
- Top + bottom (or dress)
- Undergarments
- Accessories if needed
You can roll them together or group them in packing cubes. See number 3, this is the exact travel organizer I use.
When you’re getting kids dressed in the morning, this makes everything so much faster and keeps the kids from constantly asking you what they’re supposed to wear each day. It’s as great way to make it a little more fun for the kids, get them involved and even create a little more independence.
3. Use a Travel Organizer
If you’re not using packing cubes or a travel organizer yet, this is your sign. Keeping everything organized makes a huge difference when you’re traveling with kids. This one is great because they can just hang it up in their closet, hotel room or even bathroom. They just unroll it and hang it up. So easy!
I like to:
- Use a separate organizer for each child
- Organize by outfit
- Keep essentials easy to grab like undergarments, swimsuits and even sandals
It helps keep your suitcase neat and makes unpacking (and repacking) so much easier.
4. Store Small Items Inside Hats
This is one of those small tricks that makes a big impact.
If you’re packing hats, don’t leave the inside empty. Use that space to store:
- Socks
- Hair accessories
- Small items that could get lost
It helps your hats keep their shape and gives you extra storage space at the same time. It’s 100% a win win!
5. Put Socks Inside Shoes
Another simple but effective trick. Shoes can take up a lot of space in your suitcase, so I always use them for storage by placing socks inside.
This helps:
- Maximize space
- Keep pairs together
- Prevent wasted room in your suitcase
It’s such an easy way to make your packing more efficient.
Bonus Tip: Keep It Simple
Overpacking is so easy when you’re traveling with kids, but I’ve learned that keeping things simple is always better.
Stick to:
- Mix-and-match outfits
- Comfortable pieces
- Items you know your kids will actually wear
The goal is to make your trip easier, not more complicated. Don’t overpack like crazy, but do include 2 extra outfits.
