The Russell Nashville Hotel Review: What to Know Before You Stay

Nashville has no shortage of hotels, but The Russell is unlike anywhere else we have stayed. This colorful boutique hotel is located inside a beautifully restored historic church in East Nashville. It combines original stained glass and architectural details with bright, modern décor and individually designed rooms.

Matt and I stayed at The Russell during a weekend trip to Nashville with friends, and the location gave us the best of both worlds. We were convenient to restaurants, live music and everything we wanted to do, but the hotel itself was tucked into a quiet neighborhood away from the noise and crowds of downtown. Add in complimentary parking and a mission that gives back to the Nashville community, and The Russell offers much more than a pretty place to sleep.

If you are considering The Russell for your next couples’ trip, girls’ weekend, concert getaway or quick Nashville escape, here is everything to know before booking.

About The Russell Nashville

The Russell is a 23-room boutique hotel housed inside a former church that dates back to the early 1900s. Many of the building’s original features have been preserved, including the large stained-glass windows that fill the lobby with color. The hotel’s bold décor makes it incredibly photogenic, but it still honors the history and character of the original building.

Every room has its own design, layout and personality, so your stay may look a little different depending on the room you book. That is part of what makes this hotel so fun. It is not a traditional cookie-cutter property where every hallway and room looks the same.

The Russell is also a technology-driven, concierge-free hotel. There is no traditional front desk. Before arrival, guests receive the information and door codes needed to enter the building and their room. The process was convenient and allowed us to come and go easily throughout our stay.

Our Classic King Room

Matt and I stayed in a Classic King room, which was stylish, comfortable and filled with the same colorful details found throughout the rest of the hotel. The room made a great home base for our weekend because we spent most of our time exploring Nashville but still wanted somewhere comfortable and quiet to return to at night.

One thing to keep in mind is that every room at The Russell is unique. Room sizes, layouts, colors and sleeping arrangements vary, so I recommend looking through the room descriptions and photos before choosing yours. Whether you are visiting as a couple or traveling with friends, you can select the option that works best for your group.

The East Nashville Location

Location is one of The Russell’s biggest advantages. The hotel is in East Nashville, close to local restaurants, coffee shops, breweries, shopping and music venues. It is also only a short drive or rideshare from downtown Nashville, Broadway, Nissan Stadium, Bridgestone Arena and many of the city’s most popular attractions.

We loved being convenient to everything without staying in the middle of the busiest tourist area. The neighborhood was quiet and relaxing, especially at night, and the hotel has designated quiet hours for guests. If you enjoy exploring local neighborhoods but still want easy access to downtown, this is a great location.

Free Parking at The Russell

Free parking is a major perk when staying in Nashville. The Russell has a private guest parking lot directly across the street, and each room reservation includes one complimentary parking space. Many downtown hotels charge a significant nightly parking fee, so this can make a noticeable difference in the total cost of your trip.

Guests need to register their vehicle information with the hotel, so make sure you follow the parking instructions included with your reservation. Once we arrived, it was convenient to park right across from the hotel and leave the car there when we used a rideshare.

Amenities at The Russell

The Russell does not have an onsite restaurant, bar or traditional hotel front desk. Instead, it is designed to serve as a comfortable home base while you explore East Nashville and the rest of the city. There is complimentary coffee in the lobby along with snacks, coffee and water in the guest rooms.

Guests also receive a Nashville guide featuring nearby recommendations. Since there are plenty of places to eat and explore within a few blocks, we did not miss having a restaurant inside the hotel.

The Rooms for Rooms Program

The Russell’s Rooms for Rooms program is one of the most meaningful things about the hotel. A portion of every stay is donated to local nonprofit organizations that provide beds, meals, showers and resources for people experiencing homelessness in Nashville.

The original church had a long history of serving its community, and The Russell continues that mission in a new way. According to the hotel, its charitable partnerships have helped provide more than 16,000 beds and meals since 2016. Knowing our stay helped support people in the Nashville community made the weekend even more meaningful.

What to Know Before Booking The Russell

The Russell is a unique boutique property, so there are a few things to know before reserving your room:

  • There is no traditional front desk or concierge onsite. Check-in information and door codes are sent electronically.
  • The hotel does not have a restaurant or bar, but there are several local options within a few blocks.
  • There is no guest elevator. A luggage dumbwaiter is available, but guests staying on an upper floor will need to use the stairs.
  • Each reservation includes one complimentary parking space in the lot across the street. Your vehicle must be registered.
  • Every room has a different size, layout and design, so review the individual room details carefully before booking.
  • Quiet hours help maintain the peaceful neighborhood setting.

None of these details were an issue for our stay, but they are important to consider if you prefer the services and amenities of a large traditional hotel or need an elevator-accessible room.

Who Should Stay at The Russell?

The Russell is a wonderful option for couples, friends and travelers looking for a boutique Nashville hotel with character. I especially recommend it for:

  • A couples’ weekend in Nashville
  • A girls’ getaway
  • A concert or event weekend
  • Travelers who want to explore East Nashville
  • Anyone who prefers a quiet hotel outside the busiest downtown area
  • Guests who appreciate historic architecture and colorful design
  • Travelers who want their stay to support a meaningful local mission

Families can stay here too, but I would review the room layout and sleeping capacity carefully since every room is different. The concierge-free setup and lack of an onsite restaurant may also be better suited to travelers who plan to spend most of their time exploring the city.

Is The Russell Nashville Worth It?

Yes, The Russell is absolutely worth considering for a Nashville getaway. The historic setting, beautiful stained glass, bold design, convenient East Nashville location and complimentary parking set it apart from a typical hotel. Its Rooms for Rooms program gives the property an even deeper purpose.

We enjoyed being close to everything while still having a quiet place to return to at the end of the day. The Russell is a memorable hotel with personality, history and a genuine connection to its community. If you are looking for a unique boutique hotel in Nashville rather than a large downtown property, I would happily recommend it. Would you stay in a colorful boutique hotel inside a historic church?
