Asheville, North Carolina is one of our favorite family destinations when we want mountain views, outdoor adventures and plenty of time together. We have visited more than once, and every trip has shown us a different side of the area. There is always another trail to hike, river to explore or unique place to stay.
What makes Asheville especially fun with kids is how easy it is to build a trip around the outdoors. Our children are happiest when they can swim, climb, explore and get a little dirty, so this destination is a natural fit for our family. From sliding rocks in Pisgah National Forest to floating down the French Broad River, these are the family-friendly Asheville experiences we would recommend.
Best Family-Friendly Things to Do in Asheville
1. Take a Customized Tour with Asheville Jeep Tours
One of the most memorable ways we have explored the area is with Asheville Jeep Tours. We originally thought we were simply booking a scenic Jeep ride, but the experience included so much more. The tour can be tailored around your family’s interests, and because our kids love hiking and water, our route included places where we could walk, swim and slide down natural rock formations.
Their Jeep can hold a larger group, which makes this a great option for families who want to experience the mountains together without planning every stop themselves. This was my second tour with them, and I loved that the day felt personal instead of like a standard sightseeing route.

2. Explore the Swimming Holes in Pisgah National Forest
The swimming holes in Pisgah National Forest were easily one of the biggest highlights for our kids. They loved climbing across the rocks, splashing in the cold mountain water and trying the natural rock slides. It was one of those simple vacation days they talked about long after we left.
Water levels and conditions can change, so check current park information before visiting. Bring water shoes with good traction, towels, sunscreen and a change of clothes. Younger children should stay close to an adult because the rocks can be slippery and the water can move quickly.

3. Go Tubing on the French Broad River with Zen Tubing
For an easy summer adventure, spend a few hours tubing with Zen Tubing. Floating down the French Broad River is a fun way to see Asheville from a different perspective while still keeping the day relaxed. It works especially well when everyone wants an activity but no one wants another packed itinerary.
We loved being near the river during our stay and watching tubers float past. Pack water shoes, sunscreen and a waterproof pouch for your phone, and confirm the meeting location, age requirements and river conditions before you go.

4. Find a Family-Friendly Hiking Trail
You cannot visit Asheville without spending time on a trail. The area has options for many ages and ability levels, so families can choose a short nature walk or plan a longer mountain hike. Some of our favorite hiking has happened right where we stayed, which made it easy to fit a walk into the morning or evening without driving anywhere.
Our youngest completed a two-mile hike, and it was such a proud vacation moment. Choose a trail based on the youngest child in your group, bring more water than you think you will need and allow extra time for snack breaks, rocks and every interesting thing children discover along the way.

5. Spend Time Playing Along the River
Not every family activity needs a reservation. Some of our best Asheville memories came from simply spending time beside the French Broad River. The kids collected rocks, played in the sand, waded in the water and watched people float past.
If you stay at a riverfront property, leave open time in the schedule to enjoy it. That unplanned time gave everyone a chance to slow down and became one of the most relaxing parts of our trip.

6. Enjoy a Hot Tub with a Mountain or River View
A private or shared hot tub is one amenity we always appreciate on a mountain trip. We loved starting or ending the day in the water after hiking, swimming and exploring. It gives the adults a chance to relax while still feeling like part of the outdoor experience.
Several of the Asheville properties we have visited offer hot tubs, so it is worth checking the accommodation details when you book. For our family, it is an amenity that gets used every day.

Where to Stay in Asheville with Kids
Where you stay can become part of the Asheville experience. We especially love properties that combine comfortable accommodations with river access, mountain views and activities that keep families outdoors.
AutoCamp Asheville
AutoCamp Asheville is a modern glamping property along the French Broad River. Guests can choose from Airstream suites, more spacious cabins with separate bedrooms and full kitchens or the smaller Bambi Riverfront Suite. Families and larger groups can book a BaseCamp Suite, which combines an Airstream and a Bambi and sleeps up to six guests. Riverfront and hilltop options make it possible to prioritize water views or a little more privacy.
The property also offers plenty to do between Asheville adventures. Families can relax in the hot tub, spend time in the game room or head outside for yard games and badminton. Daily crafts add another easy activity for children, making it possible to enjoy a slower day without leaving the property.

Asheville River Cabins
Asheville River Cabins is a great choice for families who want to stay close to the water. The location along the French Broad River makes the outdoors feel like an extension of your accommodations. Our kids loved playing near the river, collecting rocks and watching tubers float by.
The property is also conveniently located for a river-focused itinerary. It pairs naturally with tubing, outdoor meals and relaxed evenings, and it gives families room to enjoy Asheville without feeling as though every hour needs to be scheduled.

The Glamping Collective
The Glamping Collective offers a completely different mountain experience. Its domes feel tucked into the woods and offer beautiful views, comfortable interiors and convenient access to hiking trails. We loved being able to step outside and start exploring without first loading everyone into the car.
This is a wonderful option for families who want a peaceful retreat and a stay that feels special on its own. The mountain setting, hiking and hot tub made it easy to balance adventure with downtime.

Tips for Visiting Asheville with Children

- Check weather, trail and river conditions before heading out.
- Bring layers. Mountain mornings and evenings can feel cooler even during summer.
- Choose accommodations that match your priorities, whether that is river access, a kitchen, more sleeping space or activities on the property.
