I love lighthouses and always have ever since I was a child. I finally got to explore lighthouses to my heart’s content while in New England. They have no shortage of beautiful lighthouses all along the coast. We crossed 5 of our list, and I’m thinking that I am going to have to go on a lighthouse tour on our next trip back to New England. Keep reading to see some of my favorite lighthouses in New England.
Top Lighthouses in New England to Visit
Nubble Lighthouse – Located in York, Maine, this gorgeous lighthouse is located on just a “nub” of land. This lighthouse is now automated. It has been placed on the on the National Register of Historic Places. The guardian is now the town of York, and the US Coast Guard maintains its aids to navigation (the light and horn.)
Castle Hill Lighthouse – Located at the entrance to the East Passage of Narragansett Bay in Newport, Rhode Island, this lighthouse is probably my favorite one. It is located at the end of historic Ocean Drive and on the grounds of Castle Hill Inn. The lighthouse is not open, but it is an active navigation aid for boats entering the East Passage.
Newport Harbor Lighthouse – Located in Newport, Rhode Island, this lighthouse is on Goat Island. We spotted it while sailing in Newport, and it was so pretty seeing it from the water. The lighthouse is now on the National Register of Historic Places and managed by American Lighthouse Foundation. It is not open to the public, but you can get an up close look.
Brant Point Lighthouse – Located in Nantucket, Massachusetts, this lighthouse was established in 1746. It became automated in 1965 and is still in operation. At only 26ft tall, it is the shortest lighthouse in New England.
Sankaty Head Lighthouse – Located in Siasconset on the easternmost point in Nantucket, Massachusetts, this lighthouse is still in operation today. It was built in 1850 and has been automated since 1965.
