The Ultimate Guide to Visiting Dollywood: Tips, Rides, Shows and More

If you’re planning a trip to the Smoky Mountains, there’s one attraction that deserves a spot at the top of your itinerary: Dollywood. Nestled in the heart of Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, Dollywood combines thrilling roller coasters, award-winning entertainment, family-friendly attractions, delicious Southern food, and the beauty of the Smoky Mountains all in one place.

Our family has been visiting Dollywood for the past five years, and every trip reminds us why it’s one of our favorite theme parks in the country. Whether we’re riding roller coasters, watching one of the incredible live shows, sampling seasonal treats, or simply walking through the beautifully themed areas of the park, there’s always something new to experience. If it’s your first visit—or you’re looking for tips to make your next trip even better—this guide covers everything you need to know before visiting Dollywood.

Where Is Dollywood?

Dollywood is located in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, just a few minutes from Great Smoky Mountains National Park and about 15 minutes from Gatlinburg. That makes it easy to include as part of a Smoky Mountains vacation. If you’re driving from Memphis, it’s approximately a six-hour drive, making it a great destination for a long weekend or family road trip.

Why We Love Dollywood

We’ve visited a lot of theme parks over the years, but Dollywood continues to be one of our favorites. One of the biggest reasons is that it truly offers something for every age. Our family enjoys the thrill rides, but we also love the live entertainment, seasonal festivals, unique crafts, and incredible mountain views. Even if someone in your group doesn’t enjoy roller coasters, they’ll still find plenty to do. The park is also exceptionally clean, beautifully landscaped, and easy to navigate, which makes for a more relaxing experience than many larger theme parks.

Dollywood Tickets

Before your visit, purchase tickets online whenever possible. Dollywood offers single-day, multi-day, and season passes.

If you plan to visit more than once in a year, a season pass is often the best value and includes perks like free parking, discounts on food and merchandise, and special passholder events.

The Best Time to Visit Dollywood

While Dollywood is beautiful year-round, every season offers something different.

Flower & Food Festival (Spring)

Spring is a great time to visit as it is when the park opens back up after the winter season. The park is filled with colorful flowers, larger-than-life Mosaiculture displays, and fresh seasonal menu items.

Smoky Mountain Summer Celebration

Summer brings extended hours, warm evenings, and exciting entertainment throughout the park. It’s a great time to enjoy rides after dark and experience the nighttime drone and fireworks show.

Harvest Festival

If you love fall, this is one of the most beautiful times to visit. You’ll find pumpkins, autumn decorations, delicious seasonal food, and the famous Great Pumpkin LumiNights. This is our favorite time!

Smoky Mountain Christmas

Christmas transforms Dollywood into a winter wonderland with millions of lights, holiday shows, festive treats, and beautifully decorated streets. It has become one of our favorite family traditions.

Best Rides at Dollywood

Whether you’re a thrill seeker or prefer family-friendly attractions, Dollywood has something for everyone.

Big Bear Mountain

One of the newest additions to the park, Big Bear Mountain has quickly become one of our favorite family coasters. It’s smooth, fun, and perfect for riders who want excitement without extreme intensity.

Lightning Rod

Known as one of the park’s signature coasters, Lightning Rod delivers incredible speed and airtime.

Wild Eagle

America’s first wing coaster offers breathtaking views of the Smoky Mountains while soaring high above the park.

Thunderhead

Thunderhead is one of Dollywood’s most iconic wooden roller coasters, delivering fast-paced twists, turns, and plenty of airtime through the trees.

Mystery Mine

This indoor and outdoor coaster combines special effects, sharp turns, and an unforgettable vertical drop.

Tennessee Tornado

Designed by Arrow Dynamics, this coaster features impressive loops and remains a favorite for thrill ride enthusiasts.

Dragonflier

Perfect for families, Dragonflier offers just enough excitement for younger riders ready to experience their first larger coaster.

Best Attractions for Younger Kids

Dollywood is one of the most family-friendly theme parks we’ve visited.

Little ones will love:

  • Wildwood Grove
  • Busy Bees
  • Black Bear Trail
  • Amazing Flying Elephants
  • Village Carousel
  • Rockin’ Roadway

Wildwood Grove is especially designed with younger families in mind and offers a beautiful, shaded area filled with rides and interactive play spaces.

Don’t Skip the Shows

One thing that sets Dollywood apart is the entertainment. Throughout the day you’ll find talented musicians, bluegrass performances, gospel groups, and Broadway-quality productions. Even if you’re focused on rides, I recommend making time for at least one show.

What to Eat at Dollywood

Dollywood has some of the best theme park food anywhere.

A few favorites include:

  • Cinnamon Bread from the Grist Mill
  • Barbecue
  • Skillet meals
  • Fresh kettle corn
  • Homemade fudge
  • Ice cream
  • Seasonal festival treats

The famous cinnamon bread is a must for many visitors, but if you’re gluten-free like I am, you’ll still find several delicious dining options throughout the park.

Tips for Visiting Dollywood

After visiting for five years, here are a few things we’ve learned.

  • Arrive before the park opens.
  • Download the Dollywood app to monitor wait times.
  • Ride the most popular coasters early.
  • Wear comfortable shoes.
  • Bring a refillable water bottle.
  • Take breaks throughout the day.
  • Don’t try to do everything in one visit.
