As the mainland fades into the distance and the turquoise water stretches out in every direction, you immediately start to feel yourself slowing down.
One of the things I love most about Thatch Caye is that although it feels completely secluded, it’s still incredibly easy to reach. By the time you step off the boat, you’re greeted by the friendly staff and instantly made to feel at home.

One of the reasons we enjoy returning to Thatch Caye is that we’ve had the opportunity to experience several of the accommodations over the years. Each one has its own unique charm. We stayed in an Premier Oceanfront Cabana last year, but during this visit we stayed in the Penthouse, and it quickly became one of our favorites. Waking up to the sound of the ocean each morning never gets old, and having a comfortable place to come back to after a day on the water made the trip even more enjoyable. What Makes Thatch Caye Different?
I’ve stayed at all-inclusive resorts before. I’ve stayed on beautiful beaches and even on private islands. But Thatch Caye feels different, and it’s honestly hard to explain until you’ve experienced it yourself.
Most resorts encourage you to stay within your own group. At Thatch Caye, the atmosphere naturally brings people together. Meals are served communally, so everyone gathers around the same tables for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It creates conversations that happen so naturally, and before long you’re getting to know other couples and families from all over the world.
At the same time, you never feel like your privacy disappears. One of the things I appreciated most during our stay was how accommodating the staff was with my gluten-free diet. Traveling with dietary restrictions can sometimes be stressful, but that was never the case here. Almost every meal could be prepared gluten free, and the chefs even made special gluten-free desserts just for me so I never felt like I was missing out.
Every meal was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared, featuring local ingredients and seafood. Because everyone dines together, meals become more than just a time to eat—they become part of the experience. Matt’s highlight of the trip was definitely fishing. During our stay, another guest invited him to join a fishing trip, and what started as a simple invitation turned into one of the most memorable experiences of the vacation. Not only did we make new friends, but I also caught the biggest dorado of my life. It’s a memory we’ll never forget, and it’s the perfect example of what makes Thatch Caye so special. While Matt’s favorite part of the trip was fishing, mine was slowing down enough to truly relax. One afternoon I treated myself to a massage, and it was one of the best I’ve ever had. One of my favorite parts of every morning was simply walking along the shoreline before breakfast. There is something incredibly calming about being surrounded by nothing but turquoise water and hearing the gentle sound of the waves. It reminded me how rarely we slow down enough to truly enjoy moments like that.

One of the biggest tips I can give is to embrace the slower pace of island life. This isn’t the kind of vacation where you need a detailed itinerary. Some of our favorite memories came from simply sitting by the water, chatting with other guests over dinner, or deciding on a last-minute paddleboarding adventure.
If you’re gluten free like I am, don’t hesitate to let the resort know before your arrival. The chefs were incredibly accommodating and made sure I had delicious meals and desserts throughout our stay. I’d also recommend packing light, bringing reef-safe sunscreen, and planning to stay at least four or five nights if your schedule allows. It takes surprisingly little time to settle into island life, and you’ll wish you had just one more day before it’s time to leave.
