How to Keep New Year’s Resolutions: 10 Top Tips

How to Keep New Year's Resolutions, 10 tips by top US lifestyle blogger, Walking in Memphis in High Heels.

Last week I shared my word for 2022, and today I want to share how you can keep your goals, new year’s resolutions or word front and center this year.

1.) State your specific goal(s) and write it down.

Be as specific as possible. Instead of saying I will work out more, say something more specific like I will work out 4 days a week or I will work out for 5 hours a week. Being specific helps you to achieve what you’re really wanting instead of finding a way to justify just doing the bare minimum of your goal.

2.) Don’t pick too many goals or New Year’s Resolutions at at once.

We’re all human, and we only have so much time in a day. There is no reason to overwhelm yourself by trying to completely change a make a new you with a list of 20 different things to change. This will also be really hard to sustain. Start small and focus on a few things that are the most important to you.

3.) Focus on just one goal at a time.

Instead of focusing on all 3 of the New Year’s Resolutions you set at the same time, pick just one. I would recommend one a day or one per week to really try to work on. The more we multitask, sometimes the more unproductive we become.

4.) Make a plan.

Plan not only what you want to change or focus on, but how you will do it. How will you work out 4 more days a week? When? At what time? Who will watch the kids? To set yourself up for success, plan. And pack that gym bag and healthy snack in advance if those are part of your goals!

5.) Plan for emergencies.

They will happen. You will get sick. The kids will get sick and be home from school. Emergencies will always happen, but you don’t have to let it derail the larger picture. Know that these things will happen, and plan how you can either still meet your goals or take a break and pick back up a day or week later when you can. Give yourself grace.

6.) Track your progress.

Without tracking where you began, where you are and where you want to be, how will you even be able to measure your progress? This helps us to see how far we have come and to motivate us to keep going! Plus, it helps us to see how we were able to achieve our goals so we can use that same plan later if we need to. If you’re wanting to build more muscle, take measurements or pictures of yourself before. If you’re wanting to eat healthier, log what you typically eat, what you want to eat and what you are eating. Seeing progress is really gratifying.

7.) Grow and learn instead of falling into past traps.

This is why we make a plan and track our progress. This way, we can see what works and what doesn’t. If you have a habit or pushing off the gym to the end of the day or the end of the week, and it has yet to work so far, why would it work this time? Know yourself and what motivates you be realistic. For me, if I want to accomplish things, I know that morning is best for me! This is how I set myself up for success.

8.) Stay motivated.

What motivates you? Use this to help push yourself. Buying new running shoes? Seeing more defined muscles? Booking more jobs for the month? Whatever it is, log these little wins and celebrate them! And then keep pushing to achieve your goals all the way!

9.) Have an accountability partner.

This is such a huge part of success! Whether it is a friend, a spouse or even a group or app you use, find someone or something to keep you accountable. There will be days where you aren’t feeling it. Yo will need someone to help motivate you and also remind you how far you have already come!

10.) Remember that this is a process.

Whatever your goals are, they are usually a process. Good things take time. Take time to help turn your goals into habits. Habits are things we don’t even think about on a daily basis. And goals that become habits will be like second nature. You just do them! You just meal plan on Sunday. You just pack those healthy snacks. You just hit the gym first thing in the morning. You just take a deep breath and talk calmly to your child. You just plan that date night. If these are your goals, they will take time. Make a plan, track your progress, celebrate your wins and don’t get down on yourself if they’re not all met overnight.

What are your goals or New Year’s Resolutions for 2022? What tips do you have to set yourself up for success?
