10 Best Spring Cleaning Tips for 2021

Top 10 Best Spring Cleaning Tips featured by top Memphis lifestyle blogger, Walking in Memphis in High Heels.

It’s that time y’all! It’s spring, and with that comes spring cleaning. I love cleaning out the clutter this time of year. I go through all the girls’ closets and get rid of what doesn’t fit. And it doesn’t stop there. I go through my closet, our pantry, fridge and more. It’s the perfect time to declutter and clean! I’m sharing some of my best spring cleaning tips below!

Top 10 Spring Cleaning Tips for the Busy Mom:

1.) Try to set out a schedule or routine for your cleaning tasks.

Personally, my least favorite cleaning task is the laundry. So, I try to get that done early in the week when I have more energy, and to get it out of the way.

2.) Purge your things.

Spring is the perfect time to go through and purge stuff. During the winter months, we all know how things can gather in piles and just sort of…accumulate. When the nice weather hits, it’s the perfect time to pick a weekend, send the kids outside for the day, open the windows and start going through those piles of clothes and toys. Store the things you want to save, donate the things you don’t, and get rid of the things that are just too far gone. I love storing kids clothing in vacuum seal bags and then in a tote, like these.

3.) When you’re cleaning, work from top to bottom.

The areas of your home that are usually the dirtiest are the areas you can’t see. Places like the tops of cabinets or the refrigerator, ceiling lights and fans, etc. Clean those first and work your way down. This will make your life easier when you do one final vacuum in the end, and will keep you from having to re-clean, re-dust, or re-vacuum.

4.) Clean the places that don’t get cleaned often.

I’m talking about the nitty gritty places like the oven, microwave, dishwasher…all those things that get used nearly daily, but we rarely think to clean. Pull the filter out of your dishwasher and give that a good scrub, run a clean cycle on your washing machine and give the oven a seriously good scrub (do it while the windows are open and the kids are outside). You’ll be amazed at just how dirty these places really are, and how much better you’ll feel after they’re clean!

5.) Change your air filters.

Having a clean house really makes no real difference if the air is dirty. Spring is the perfect time to pull out those old filters and pop in new ones. An easy task that makes a huge difference!

6.) Digital De-clutter.

I know I’m not the only person that keeps out-of-date screenshots, the 25 photos my toddler took of the living room floor while she was running around with my phone, and other pictures and videos that just don’t need to be there. Take an afternoon or evening and go through your phone, deleting anything that you don’t need. A fun bonus tip? Clear up extra storage by moving old photos and videos to a Google Drive folder or a Drop Box folder for a longer term storage solution!

7.) Don’t forget about your bedding.

I’m not going to hit you with stats but do y’all know how dirty mattresses and pillows can get? Open up those bedroom windows, strip the bed, throw your pillows in the washing machine and deep clean that mattress! Don’t forget to get those dust bunnies from under the bed too!

8.) Re-Organize closets and cabinets.

I find that spring is my favorite time to go through cabinets and closets, de-clutter, deep clean and re-organize.

9.) Get your whole family involved.

Everyone lives in your home, so everyone has contributed to the mess. Even the littlest members of your family can be helpers. Delegate tasks to your kids like going through their toys and taking a hard look at what they really like playing with, and what they can give to other children. Having them keep others in mind is a great way to keep them focused on the task. Allow little hands to help strip and make beds, dust surfaces and vacuum or mop the floors. Kids can be great helpers, and they’ll love getting to help contribute to the household chores!

10.) Don’t feel like you have to do it all in a day.

Spring is an entire season, y’all. There’s no reason to feel like you have to rush to get everything done in a day, or even a weekend. Spread it out through a week, two weeks…the entire season. Whatever works best for you! There’s never a time when it’s “too late” to do your spring cleaning!
