We couldn’t go to Italy, so we created our own Ciao Summer night at home. I had been wanting to host a girls’ dinner before summer ended, and an Italian-inspired tablescape gave me the perfect excuse to invite everyone over, decorate the backyard and spend the evening eating and catching up.
I wanted the table to look special without becoming so complicated that I spent the entire night working. I started with blue and white, then used fresh flowers, lemons, tomatoes and candlelight to bring everything together. The finished table was bright and summery during dinner, but it became even prettier once the sun went down and the candles started glowing.

We had chicken fettuccine Alfredo, including a gluten-free option for me, along with Caesar salad and the sides we needed to complete dinner.

I could focus on decorating before everyone arrived, then open the containers, transfer what I wanted into serving pieces and enjoy the evening. I would also keep the menu easy. Choose one main dish, a salad and a couple of sides or order a family meal from a favorite local restaurant. Our Ciao Summer dinner ended up being exactly what I hoped it would be.
